A Million Freds Productions

Based in London, A Million Freds Productions began by embracing its South African roots with productions of work by Athol Fugard, the Oscar-winning writer Ronald Harwood, working with the award-winning lighting designer and
co-founder of the Market Theatre Johannesburg, Mannie Manim, and commissioned new work in a social and political context from South African writers.

Recent Productions

Over the last three years A Million Freds Productions has presented two modern classic plays at Strindberg’s Intima Teater in Stockholm, as well as having commissioned a play by Nick Grosso in
co-production with Dramaten.

The first, "Betrayal" by Harold Pinter, won an award as Best Play in Stockholm in 2003 and both this and "The Real Thing" by Tom Stoppard (2004) were welcomed with interest and praise. They were performed in English with a mixed Anglo-Swedish cast led by Gerhard Hoberstorfer and Janine Ulfane and directed by Mick Gordon. In 2005, AMFP produced, in collaboration with Elverket at The Royal Dramatic Theatre, "a play in swedish english and italian" by playwright Nick Grosso, starring Janine Ulfane, Ulf Friberg and Anna Björk among others, and was directed by Mick Gordon.

PRESS QUOTES:

Press quotes about the AMFP production of “Betrayal”:

“This brilliantly played production is nothing less than a first-rate surprise.” Leif Zern, Dagens Nyheter June 15th 2003

“Theatre can hardly be any more exciting than this!” Sara Granath, Svenska Dagbladet, June 18th 2003

” In this play, there is a veritable forest of subtext, irony and subjective perspective…. This excellent cast is properly looking after the pinteresque language.” Claes Wahlin, Aftonbladet 19th June 2003

About “The Real Thing”:

“The Swedish-English cast has, with the aid of Mick Gordon’s self-confident directing, created a precise style of acting which is perfectly suited to the play and does justice to it’s complexity…It’s so convincingly chilly, that the audience suddenly finds it impossible to fend itself from the play’s most secret undertow- a strong but unspoken longing for the real thing…” Ingegärd Waaranperä, Dagens Nyheter 7th Sept. 2004

” …in order to pay tribute to Janine Ulfane’s skilful performance as Annie, one would need a small chorus of praise, and as for Gerhard Hoberstorfer’s Henry…(he) outdoes himself. All students of theatre and addicts of letters are hereby strongly recommended to see The Real Thing. They will be treated to a simultaneous lesson in acting and verbal gymnastics. It’s theatre from the first line to the last…” Claes Wahlin, Aftonbladet 4th Sept 2004

About “a play in swedish english and italian”:

“Mick Gordon…pinpoints the impassable abyss of mutually misunderstood small gestures and sayings …”
Ingegärd Waaranperä, Dagens Nyheter April 2005

”… a well-played situational comedy…” Claes Wahlin, Aftonbladet 11th April 2005

”Grosso’s play is a light-hearted comedy… a morality about the world- deftly performed in various languages…but the way the characters create themselves as mass medial successes irregardless of nationality is what binds them together…”
Lars Ring, Svenska Dagbladet 10th April 2005.
